Claude Voice Mode Gets More Capabilities With Opus and Sonnet

Anthropic has extended Claude Voice Mode to Opus and Sonnet AI models. Following the update, Anthropic’s voice feature will work on connected services, enabling users to complete tasks by speaking to the AI chatbot. Claude Voice Mode is available in beta on the web, mobile and desktop apps across all subscription plans. However, capabilities of the voice feature vary depending on the subscription plan.

What is Anthropic’s Voice Mode?

Voice Mode is a feature that allows users to interact with the Claude AI assistant using natural speech instead of typing. With this feature, users can ask questions aloud, receive a voice response, and switch seamlessly between voice and text without losing the context of the conversation.

According to Anthropic, Voice Mode works on web search and other connected tools including Google Calendar, Gmail, Slack, and Google Docs. Subscribers can also use the voice feature to interact with Claude in other languages. Initially, Claude Voice Mode only supported the English language.

Earlier this year, Anthropic introduced beta support for German, French, Italian, Indonesian, Korean, Spanish, Portuguese, and Japanese. Users have to select their preferred voice language manually from the settings menu. Anthropic released Claude Voice in beta weeks after OpenAI upgraded ChatGPT’s Voice with GPT Live models to make conversations feel more natural.

How Does Claude Voice Mode Work With Opus and Sonnet AI?

Previously, Voice Mode was powered by Anthropic’s Haiku model, which largely focused on generating faster responses. The latest addition of Sonnet and Opus expands the capabilities of Claude Voice features to support longer conversations.

The Claude Sonnet Voice feature can also complete demanding tasks including reviewing presentations, providing feedback, and brainstorming ideas. Since voice conversations can access Google Calendar, Google Docs, and Gmail, users will no longer have to switch between these tools to retrieve information or complete tasks.

Rather, they can use Claude Voice Mode to check emails, retrieve documents, conduct web searches, and even review schedules without leaving a voice conversation. Although Voice Mode capabilities largely depend on a user’s subscription plan, the update allows users to switch between Opus, Haiku, and Sonnet AI models during conversations.

Voice Mode is designed to support back-to-forth speech interactions. Claude AI generates the voice responses and voice conversations are automatically saved as text transcripts in chat history. To prevent impersonation, Anthropic has limited Voice Mode to a set of preset voices. The voice feature is currently unavailable in Claude Cowork, Fable 5, and Claude Code.

What the Voice Mode Update Means for Anthropic

The move to expand Voice Mode to more capable AI models and integrate it with productivity tools highlights Anthropic’s plan to position Claude as a hands-free digital assistant for work and personal tasks. With OpenAI also expanding its voice AI capabilities, competition will likely revolve around delivery of seamless, context-aware experiences, rather than responding to questions.
