Cursor Expands Influence in India With Lower-Priced Subscription Plan

Cursor AI has introduced the first India-specific subscription plan called Cursor Start. The AI developer priced the new plan at Rs 649, which is about $7 per month. Cursor’s India pricing plan is significantly lower than its standard $20/month Pro subscription plan. The AI firm doubles down on the Indian market ahead of its acquisition by Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
Why is Cursor Focusing on India?
Cursor’s expansion in India highlights the country’s growing significance to its business. In recent years, the Asian country has become one of the largest software developer hubs globally. Earlier this year, GitHub placed the number of Indian developers on its platform at over 27 million. Over two million of these joined the platform in 2026.
“Our user base in India has tripled in the past year to more than 3M developers, making it our third largest market globally. It is also home to more power users than any other market in the world, with developers in India running more agent requests per developer than anywhere else,” Cursor said in a statement.
Cursor joins OpenAI and Anthropic in rolling out subscription plans specific to the Indian market as the companies compete to attract users. Although the new pricing plan is limited to India, Cursor is expected to localize subscriptions in other markets once the model works. OpenAI followed the same approach with its ChatGPT Go plan. The AI developer introduced the plan in India first before rolling the plan out to other markets.
What Does Cursor’s Subscription in India Include?
Cursor Start gives Indian subscribers access to Grok 4.5 and Cursor’s Composer 2.5 model. Users receive higher usage limits compared to the free tier plan. They also get cloud agents, plugins, Model Context Protocol (MCP) support, the iOS app, hooks, and skills.
Cursor designed the new pricing plan for developers who require high-performing AI-powered developer tools without upgrading to the full Pro plan. However, the India-only plan will not replace the Cursor Pro plan. This means Cursor Start subscribers will not access OpenAI and Anthropic frontier AI models, which are available to Pro subscribers.
Advanced features such as Auto Mode, Automations, Bugbot, and the Cursor SDK will also not be available to Cursor Start users. Indian subscribers will be billed in rupees. Payment can be made using credit and debit cards. Cursor also supports India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
What the India Expansion Means for Cursor
Cursor’s lower-priced India plan reflects its focus on tapping the country’s rapidly growing developer community. As AI coding tools become more competitive, success in India could strengthen Cursor’s global position and accelerate adoption of its AI coding assistant. To ensure that only users in India benefit from its lower-priced subscription plan, Cursor will deter access via virtual private networks.
