Google Introduces New Requirements for Android Apps as Memory Chip Shortage Bites

Google has changed memory requirements for Android apps amid industry-wide. The move is designed to respond to the smartphone memory shortage triggered by rising demand from AI data centers. What Android App Requirements has Google Introduced?

The tech company has also introduced DEX code optimization requirements to prevent performance-related issues such as app slowdowns and crashes. The tech giant said more diagnostic tools on the Google Play Store will be rolling out later this year to help developers prepare for the new requirements. These will include deeper insights generated by the Memory Limiter feature, which keeps apps from using too much device memory.

Zero-Tap Sign-In Requirement for Android Apps

Google will be requiring all apps on the Play Store to comply with the Zero Tap Sign-In requirement during device migrations by April 2027. Under this standard, the tech giant requires apps with optional or mandatory user sign-ins to automatically restore their sign-in state when they shift between Android devices.

Developers with such apps will be expected to use Android’s Restore Credentials API to meet this requirement. Currently, games are exempted from the Zero-Tap Sign-In requirement. Google is expected to release dedicated guidance and solutions for gaming authentication in 2027.

When Will the Android App Memory Limits Take Effect?

Google will start enforcing the new Android RAM requirements in February 2027. The apps and games that do not meet the new thresholds will likely face reduced visibility and publishing capabilities on Google Play Store.
