Why WWDC 2026 Could Mark Apple’s Biggest AI Reset Yet

In Focus

  • WWDC 2026 will likely be the most consequential event for Apple
  • Tim Cook is expected to make his last major appearance at WWDC 2026
  • Siri AI is expected to carry day at the annual developers conference

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) event starts today, June 8 and the keynote address will likely define the tech company’s position in the AI era. Tim Cook’s appearance at the Apple WWDC 2026 is expected to be his last major event as the company’s chief executive officer. His keynote address makes this year’s AI announcement significant for Apple.

What Big Updates are Expected at WWDC 2026?

WWDC 2026 will likely be the most consequential event in the tech company’s recent history. Apple is expected to reset its AI strategy with Siri AI updates expected to dominate discussions at the WWDC.

Powered by Google Gemini, the revamped Siri is expected to feature advanced capabilities including the ability to draft emails using prompts, summarize emails and notes, and manage schedules. The updated AI assistant will handle more complicated requests involving multiple steps.

Apple is expected to preview a range of AI features across iOS, macOS, watchOS, and iPadOS platforms. The tech giant is also expected to showcase a GenAI website at the annual event. The GenAI website will likely serve as a hub for the company’s AI offerings.

Apple’s Long Journey to AI

Apple’s AI announcement at WWDC 2026 will come two years after the company unveiled the initial wave of Apple Intelligence features. During WWDC 2024, the company promised system-wide intelligence across its iPhone, Mac, and iPad devices. Apple also committed to release a more powerful Siri powered by AI.

The tech company experienced a delay in releasing these features with the iPhone 16 series. The delay attracted criticism with questions around execution and delivery timelines emerging. In 2024, the company started introducing Apple Intelligence features. But availability of these features varied widely across regions. In India, the AI features started rolling out in March 2025.

Delays in introducing a revamped version of Siri have compounded the situation for Apple. In 2024, the company showcased an AI assistant with deeper contextual understanding, on-screen awareness, and cross-app functionality.

The company has not delivered these features to users yet. Recently, the tech company agreed to settle a class action lawsuit at a cost of $250 million for allegedly misleading buyers with AI features that were unavailable at launch.

What WWDC Updates Could Mean for iPhone Users

Apple’s WWDC updates are expected to redefine how users interact with their devices. They will also provide a sneak preview of how the tech company plans to compete in the AI industry where Microsoft, Google, and Samsung already have an edge.

To date, Apple has taken a cautious approach to AI while prioritizing privacy and limiting AI features in its devices. As a result, the company’s portfolio of AI tools in iPhones is much smaller compared to those in Samsung Galaxy smartphones and Google Pixel devices.
