OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Launch to Proceed Following U.S. Government Approval
In Focus
- The U.S. government delayed approval of GPT-5.6 release over national security concerns
- A government framework subjects AI systems to one month national security risk assessment
- OpenAI will launch GPT-5.6 Sol alongside Terra and Luna AI models
OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 launch is set to take place on July 9 after the AI firm delayed the release last month at the request of the U.S. government. With the release moving forward this week, GPT-5.6 is expected to become OpenAI’s most advanced AI model available to the public.
Why Was GPT-5.6 Launch Delayed?
The U.S. government delayed the launch of OpenAI’s latest AI model over concerns that advanced AI systems could potentially be misused. The U.S. and China are locked in a stiff competition to develop next-generation AI models.
Experts warn that advanced AI models could significantly enhance the sophistication of cyberattacks across industries that rely on complex, highly interconnected, and aging technology infrastructure.
In recent months, Washington has tightened scrutiny over frontier AI model launches over concerns that the technology could be exploited for military or intelligence purposes by countries such as China and Russia.
Last month, the U.S. government ordered Anthropic to restrict access to Mythos and Fable 5 AI models by foreign nationals. The restrictions, which were lifted last week, showed how the U.S. views AI models as a national security asset. In China, authorities have met leading tech companies to discuss potential restrictions to foreign access to its most advanced AI models.
How Did GPT-5.6 Win Government Approval?
Initially, OpenAI had granted GPT-5.6 access to selected vetting partners. The U.S. government reportedly approved OpenAI’s frontier model launch after additional testing. Government officials also held meetings with OpenAI representatives prior to the approval.
U.S.President Donald Trump has established a framework for assessing national security risks posed by advanced AI systems through an executive order. Under this framework, AI systems developed by U.S. companies have to be vetted for a month prior to their public release. Participation of AI developers in the vetting process is voluntary.
Which Other AI Models Will Launch Alongside GPT-5.6?
OpenAI plans to release GPT-5.6 Sol alongside Terra and Luna, which are lower-cost AI models. However, the AI firm has said Sol’s advanced capabilities in coding, biology, and cybersecurity.
The AI model also features a “max reasoning effort” mode that allows it to spend more time solving complex tasks. Like Anthropic’s Claude Mythos, OpenAI said Sol comes with strong safeguards and cyber capabilities.
“GPT‑5.6 Sol is better at helping people find and fix vulnerabilities than reliably carrying out end-to-end attacks. As these capabilities continue to advance, our priority is to make sure they reach and benefit defenders, who can use these tools to find weaknesses, develop patches, and strengthen systems more broadly.” the AI firm noted in a statement last month.
