Google Brings Gemini AI to Waze With Smarter Navigation and Voice Search

In Focus

  • AI update enables Waze to customize updates like road reports
  • The new find location feature allows users to locate destinations with ease
  • The motorcycle mode feature helps riders to find the best routes

Waze is getting a set of new AI to make it more conversational. With the new AI-powered navigation features, Waze, which is owned by Google, can now customize updates such as conversational road reporting. Some of the new features will be powered by the Gemini AI assistant.

How Google is Integrating Gemini in Waze?

Waze users can now use Gemini to find destinations by simply chatting the app. The app makes it easy for users to find locations when they know what they want but are unsure of where to go. To find a destination, users can tap the voice search icon and ask the app to locate what they want.

For instance, a user can ask Waze “Find me a gas station with lowest prices nearby”. The navigation app will respond with different options. Waze is rolling out the new Gemini-powered find location feature in beta globally on both iOS and Android. The AI update also allows Waze to personalize navigation routes based on a user’s travel history and understanding of traffic patterns in a city.

For instance, the app will first suggest highway routes for users who prefer such over local streets. Users who don’t want personalized routes can select alternate routes or turn off the personalization feature in their settings. Google has integrated Gemini into Waze months after it added “Ask Maps” to Google Maps.

What Other Features are Launching on Waze?

In addition to finding locations, Waze is bringing AI-powered motorcycle mode to the navigation platform. This feature uses AI to generate shortcuts and road restrictions for motorcycle riders, enabling them to find the best routes to their destinations.

The Waze motorcycle mode also informs riders of hazards that need careful maneuvering, including speed bumps, potholes, shoulder endings, raised crosswalks, and narrow bridges. Waze is rolling out the new motorcycle mode on iOS and Android in selected countries. These include Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, the Philippines, Peru, and Malaysia. The company said the motorcycle mode feature will expand to more countries in the coming months.

For drivers who prefer quiet rides, Waze is rolling out the “Less Chatty” mode. This new setting limits voice guidance so users can enjoy their music or podcasts with fewer interruptions. Waze is maintaining important alerts for hazards and turns but these will be less frequent. This feature has already rolled out globally on both Android and iOS.

What Waze’s New AI Features Reveal About Google

Waze’s latest AI updates reflect Google’s broader strategy of embedding Gemini across its products to deliver more personalized, conversational experiences. By combining AI-powered voice interactions, customized navigation, and intelligent route recommendations, Google is transforming Waze from a traditional navigation app into a smarter travel assistant. The update also shows Google’s growing focus on using AI to differentiate its consumer services while strengthening the Gemini ecosystem across Android and its wider software portfolio.
