Spotify is introducing an AI music assistant that allows Premium users to discover and select audio content using interactive conversations. The new feature represents a significant milestone for the company as it integrates AI technology into its listening experience.
How Does Spotify’s Music Assistant Work?
The new AI music assistant allows users to chat with Spotify on mobile devices across the ‘Home” and “Now Playing” functions. Users can interact with the tool by typing or speaking to the app to determine what they play next.
According to Spotify, the conversational AI tool also allows users to chat about their listening history while helping them to learn more about their favorite music, audiobooks, or podcasts.
“The new conversational experience is part of our ongoing work to make Spotify more personal and useful for every listener, giving people more ways to get the most out of every moment. Use it your way: press the mic button to talk, type instead, or keep listening like you always have,” Spotify said in a statement posted on its website.
What Other Tasks Can Spotify’s AI Assistant Perform?
The ChatGPT-like music assistant allows users to ask Spotify for details about audio content. For instance, users can ask about album release dates, inspiration behind specific songs, and artist recommendations, based on the content they play.
Spotify, which introduced verified artist badges earlier this year, said the AI assistant can help users to explore more about the genres streamed in the past or the first time they played a specific song. Additionally, users can ask Spotify to save songs, add tracks to their queue, or follow artists through the new feature.
“Because Spotify understands your playlists, favorite artists, repeat listens, and listening history, it can help answer questions about your taste. It’s a new way to explore the story of your taste, from the songs you keep on repeat to the artists, genres, and moments that shaped it,” Spotify added.
How Does Spotify Power the AI Music Assistant?
Spotify is using in-house AI technology and models from different providers to power the interactive conversation experience. The interactive conversation feature is the company’s latest effort to use AI technology to power user interaction with its vast music, podcast, and audiobook catalog.
The music assistant appears to be part of Spotify’s push to improve content discovery using AI. In April, the platform expanded AI discovery to podcasts. Already, the audio streaming platform offers an AI-voiced DJ which users interact with directly. The company also offers AI-powered tools that allow users to curate playlists using prompts and link Spotify to AI chatbots such as ChatGPT.
When Will Spotify’s Music Assistant Be Available
Spotify has started rolling out the AI music assistant to mobile users in beta. Initially, the tool is available to users in the U.S., Ireland, and Sweden on iOS and Android devices. Currently, it’s only available in the English language to users aged 18 and above.
