SpaceXAI Debuts Grok 4.5, Claims Near-Opus 4.8 Performance at Lower Cost

Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI has launched its newest AI model, Grok 4.5. The new AI model is designed to perform coding and agentic tasks. SpaceXAI has priced Grok 4.5 at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens. Users can access the new AI model across Grok Build, the SpaceXAI console, and all Cursor plans. Grok 4.5 is SpaceXAI’s first AI model launch since its Nasdaq debut last month.
How Grok 4.5 Compares to Other AI Models in Efficiency
According to SpaceXAI, Grok 4.5 operates at 80 tokens per second. The AI model offers about twice the token efficiency that other top AI systems deliver, which means it completes tasks in fewer steps.
Besides coding, Grok 4.5 can complete legal and finance tasks. SpaceXAI, which recently acquired Cursor AI, said the AI model can build multi-sheet Excel models and generate Power Point presentations using native shapes. Commenting on the new model’s performance, Musk said its capabilities approach those of Anthropic’s flagship AI model.
“Our internal assessment is that Grok 4.5 is roughly comparable to Opus 4.7, but much faster. The combination of capability, faster speed and lower cost is what makes it competitive,” Musk posted on X.
In terms of cost, Grok 4.5 pricing to be slightly higher than OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Luna. However, the new model costs less than Anthropic’s Opus 4.8. OpenAI prices GPT-5.6 Luna at $1 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens. Anthropic prices Claude Opus 4.8 at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens.
Grok 4.5 Focuses on Practical Usefulness
SpaceXAI said Grok 4.5 is designed to handle a wide range of knowledge-intensive tasks that organizations are increasingly assigning to AI. These capabilities span software engineering, application development, research, content creation, administrative support, and other everyday professional responsibilities.
According to Musk, the AI company is placing greater emphasis on real-world performance and practical usefulness rather than focusing solely on benchmark results.
“We are closing the loop on real-world usefulness, not benchmarks. Hardcore engineers at Tesla & SpaceX find Grok 4.5 genuinely useful, which is what actually matters,” he said.
Grok 4.5 will be available to users starting July 9 after SpaceXAI received positive feedback from users who tested the beta version. SpaceXAI’s Grok 4.5 AI model launches at the same time as OpenAI’s GPT-Live models. The new AI models are designed to make ChatGPT conversations feel more natural.
