  • PayPal’s workforce in India stood at 6,000 employees prior to the layoffs

  • The company reportedly used calls and emails to inform employees about job cuts

  • PayPal plans to reduce its global workforce by 20% over the next two to three years

PayPal has laid off workers across several teams in India as part of its global workforce restructuring efforts. Multiple reports have placed PayPal India layoffs at around 600 employees. On August 31, a PayPal spokesperson had suggested India layoffs would affect about 220 workers.

The job losses affected teams working in engineering, technology, operations, finance, and payments in Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru offices. Paypal’s India workforce comprised 6,000 employees before the layoffs.

Why is PayPal Laying Off Workers in India?

According to PayPal, the job cuts in India are part of a broader, multi-year restructuring plan announced in May. The company planned to reduce its global workforce by 20% in the coming two to three years.

“The recent staffing changes are part of our previously announced multi-year transformation to simplify our global operations, strengthen execution, and position the company for long-term growth," a PayPal spokesperson said as cited by News18.

PayPal said that the decision to cut jobs globally was part of a strategy to deliver at least $1.5 billion in gross run-rate over the next two to three years. The company’s global workforce stood at approximately 23,800 at the end of 2025, which means a 20% reduction could affect around 4.760 roles.

PayPal is reportedly implementing the global employee reduction plan in phases, starting with the Asia-Pacific region. The company reportedly held meetings with affected employees across the U.S., Europe, the Middle East and Africa on Monday. PayPal’s restructuring efforts in India come as Oracle and Microsoft reportedly plan to cut jobs in the country.

How Were PayPal Layoffs Communicated to Employees?

PayPal, which recently launched global UPI plans in India, appears to have communicated the layoffs through calls and emails. Some affected employees reported that the company provided little or no information prior to the layoffs. Some reported they learnt about the decision on a call and that no prior notice was issued.

“We didn’t get any prior notice. We got an invite to join a call on Monday morning (August 31), and there were many employees on it from across offices in India. We were informed that we would be let go. Right after the call, our access was immediately revoked," An affected employee said.

Another affected employee said communication was made through a direct email on Monday morning. Some workers reported that the company offered job assistance and one month’s salary as severance pay, but no further communication has been made.

“Decisions like these are never easy. We recognise the impact they have on our employees and are committed to supporting them through this transition,” PayPal’s spokesperson added.

What PayPal Layoffs Mean for India

The job cuts by PayPal highlight the growing pressure on India’s tech workforce. It signals a shift toward leaner teams as global companies intensify cost-cutting measures. The move could lead to greater uncertainty for employees across technology, operations, and support functions.
