OpenAI is reportedly planning to release GPT-5.6 AI models. The Information reports that the AI developer could release the new models this month. Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI’s chief scientist, reportedly informed staff that GPT-5.6 could be a meaningful improvement over GPT-5.5.
What is OpenAI’s New in GPT-5.6?
OpenAI released its flagship GPT-5.5 model in April this year. This model offers faster speeds and is designed to better understand user goals. GPT-5.6 is expected to improve these features while boosting efficiency and offering better safeguards.
The new AI models will reportedly focus on accessibility and usability. They will likely feature advanced reasoning, better front-end generation, and streamlined coding automation. These aspects will make GPT-5.6 cost-efficient and user–friendly.
GPT-5.6 is also expected to improve image understanding, enhance image-based reasoning, and improve visual data analysis. While OpenAI has not confirmed the GPT-5.6 release date, its launch in the coming week would coincide with the company’s plan to revamp ChatGPT.
What Does GPT-5.6 Mean for the AI Race?
GPT-5.6 will likely increase competition between OpenAI and Anthropic in the race to develop advanced AI models. Anthropic released a public version of its Mythos model, called Claude Fable 5 on June 9.
Claude Fable 5 has shown strong performance in software engineering, knowledge work, and vision tasks. However, it restricts responses in high-risk areas such as cybersecurity, biology, chemistry, and model distillation, automatically switching to Claude Opus 4.8 for these requests.
Mythos was first released as a limited preview in April due to concerns around its potential cybersecurity impact. Anthropic initially restricted its access to a group of partners before expanding to150 organisations across 15 countries last week.
OpenAI is expected to release its new models as it pursues its public listing plans. The AI developer filed a confidential IPO application with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on June 8, a week after Anthropic. In a message to OpenAI staff, CEO Sam Altman said the company would likely go public over the next one year.
OpenAI’s Data Center Plans
Altman projected that if AI reaches recursive self-improvement, which is the point where it can improve and create new AI systems on its own, the technology could change the world in unpredictable ways. OpenAI continues to invest heavily on AI infrastructure. The company is reportedly planning a new data center in Ohio, which would require substantial funding. The need to raise additional capital will likely push OpenAI toward an IPO sooner than expected.
