OpenAI started testing ChatGPT ads in the U.S. in February
The AI firm currently runs ads in over 40 countries
OpenAI is targeting $2.5 billion in ad revenue this year
OpenAI’s annualized ads revenue has topped $1 billion, the company announced on August 31. The AI firm considers the milestone proof of its business diversification strategy ahead of its IPO. According to OpenAI, ads appearing on its chatbot are clearly labelled and do not interfere with ChatGPT responses. User conversations, chat history, and memories are not visible to advertisers. The AI firm shares aggregated campaign reports highlighting data such as clicks and impressions with advertisers.

Why OpenAI’s $1 Billion Ad Revenue Matters
OpenAI’s annualized revenue run rate growth comes as the company prepares for a potential IPO this year. The AI firm is under pressure to justify its $852 billion valuation to investors. Its ad business builds on existing revenue streams, which include consumer subscriptions, enterprise offerings, and usage-based application programming interfaces.
OpenAI started testing ChatGPT ads in the U.S in February. While the move was highly anticipated, it was considered controversial. For years now, tech giants like Meta and Google have relied on digital ads to drive revenue. OpenAI’s rival Anthropic ridiculed the decision to introduce ads to ChatGPT on its first Super Bowl campaign.
Besides the U.S., OpenAI introduced ChatGPT ads in more than 40 countries. The AI firm displays ads on Go and Free tier accounts, which constitute the vast majority of its 1 billion weekly active users. Last week, the AI developer introduced ChatGPT ads in India. The company plans to roll out self-service access to serve markets across Europe, India, the Middle East and North Africa.
Focus on Growing Advertising Revenue
OpenAI is looking to grow ad revenue to $2.5 billion in the current fiscal year. It is also on track to exceed $40 billion in total annualized revenue, which is roughly double its run rate at the end of 2025.
“Our next phase of growth will bring ChatGPT ads to more markets and introduce additional formats, objectives, buying options, and measurement capabilities. We will also explore new ways for businesses to interact with consumers in more native ways in ChatGPT,” OpenAI said as cited by CNBC.
Last week, OpenAI announced that 50 brands participated in its India ads rollout, where it is partnering with agencies WPP and Omnicom. The AI firm plans to launch a self-serve ad manager for Indian marketers on September 4. The platform will have a daily minimum budget of Rs. 725 ($7.60).
What Ads Revenue Growth Means for OpenAI
OpenAI’s $1 billion ads revenue milestone means ChatGPT could become a major commercial platform for the AI developer. While expanding into new markets and self-serve advertising could accelerate growth, maintaining user trust will be crucial for the AI firm. If OpenAI succeeds in balancing monetization with privacy and user experience, ad revenue could boost investor confidence ahead of its IPO.
