Microsoft Makes Hyderabad Data Center Key AI Hub for Asia and Global South

Microsoft has announced a new cloud region in India, the India South Central. The tech giant considers the new facility, which is located in Hyderabad, a strategic hub for Asia and the Global South. Microsoft’s Hyderabad data center is the company’s fourth facility in India, with others located in Pune, Chennai, and Mumbai.  The AI facility will use zero water for cooling as the company seeks to enhance environmental sustainability. 

What Makes Microsoft’s India South Central Facility Strategic? 

Microsoft’s new cloud region in India reflects the company’s long-term plan to support AI growth in the region. The facility uses a three-zone architecture to support future expansion, with plans to expand to Azure and AI services in the future. 

According to the tech giant, the India South Central data center is expected to support deployment of sensitive workloads in India while helping enterprises to comply with AI governance requirements, including security and data sovereignty rules.

“India South Central region launches with a broad portfolio of Azure services and is designed to support the full portfolio of Azure and AI services, including Microsoft Foundry, as additional capabilities roll out in the coming months,” Microsoft said in a statement. 

Hyderabad represents a significant milestone in Microsoft’s $20.5 billion commitment to India and converts the investment into operational infrastructure. Speaking at the Microsoft AI Infrastructure Summit in India, India's Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, and Electronics & Information Technology Shri Jitin Prasada acknowledged Microsoft’s contribution in building the country’s AI capabilities. 

“Investments such as these expand national AI capability, accelerate innovation, and enable developers, enterprises, and public institutions to build and deploy AI with confidence,” Honorable Prasada said. 

Expanding AI-Ready Capabilities Across India

Microsoft has also equipped its data center regions across India with AI support. Speaking at the Microsoft AI Infrastructure Summit in India, Microsoft’s India and South Asia President, Puneet Chandok, said all regions are now AI-enabled and feature AI-ready hardware, efficient cooling systems, and the technology needed to run advanced AI workloads.

Microsoft also highlighted progress in its AI skills program in India. Through Microsoft Elevate India, the tech company has equipped over 10 million people with AI skills. About 25% of the trainees have earned credentials for further training. The program is helping prepare more people for jobs and opportunities in the growing AI economy.

“Compute alone does not make a nation AI-ready. Capability does: the ability to take AI from pilot to production on platforms that are sovereign-ready, secure, and sustainable. India has the talent and the ambition,” Chandok noted.

Its focus on AI-ready technology, secure data, and local workloads could boost AI adoption among Indian businesses and public institutions. Microsoft’s investment also supports India’s broader goal of becoming a global AI hub.
