Google Expands Usage Limits for Gemini Pro After Developers Pushback on Pricing Changes

- Google had replaced the daily prompts tallying system with compute-based limits
- This change triggered backlash from developers
- Developers claimed lengthy coding sessions lockouts fast
- Google tripled usage limits for paid Gemini users and reset weekly user quotas
Google has expanded usage limits for Gemini Pro models following severe backlash over its new compute-based caps. The company introduced the restrictive limits earlier this week following the Google I/O 2026 event. The changes included weekly limits across Gemini paid tiers and a new usage dashboard.
What Had Changed in Gemini Paid Plans?
The issue started soon after the search giant changed the way it calculates usage within the developer ecosystem and the Gemini app. Instead of tallying daily prompts the way it previously did, the company shifted to a compute-based system that analyses the features used, complexity of individual requests, and chat history length.
According to Google, this approach allows it to allocate server power more effectively. However, the new policy is more costly for paid users. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers took to developer forums claiming lengthy coding sessions trigger lockouts fast. This is because intense coding consumes huge volumes of computational data, which burns their weekly quotas within minutes.
Google had communicated the changes in Gemini Pro AI limit measurements to users via email. The company had not stated the standard measure of compute consumption in its communication.
How Did Google Respond to User Complaints?
As complaints about the Gemini paid plan update escalated on developer forums and Reddit, Google responded to the backlash. The tech giant tripled usage limits for paid Gemini users and reset weekly user quotas.
“We’re 3xing the rate limits for Gemini models across all paid tiers in Antigravity and resetting everyone’s Gemini quota for the week. We understand some people hit their rate limits quickly and wanted to respond fast. Lots more to come and enjoy building,” Google Antigravity Team, Varun Mohan said in a post on X.
Later, Google acknowledged that users were exhausting limits quickly. The tech giant pushed an automated message directly to user dashboards, indicating that the quota limits are now permanent.
“If you are on a paid plan, your Gemini quota has been reset for the week and increased by 3x moving forward. Keep building,” Google stated in the notification.
Paid users have reported viewing the notification in their accounts. The new limits appear to be rolling out gradually and may not have reflected in some user accounts. Later, Mohan took to X to reaffirm users that the 3x usage limit for Gemini Pro models was permanent.
What Next for Google
By responding to developer complaints, Google appears to have addressed the Gemini Pro usage limits issue. The quick response shows that Google is listening and ready to adapt its infrastructure to meet user needs. But AI features increasingly demand higher computing power. Premium subscribers will be waiting to see whether the company introduces a more reliable and predictable pricing model in future.
