Anthropic Unveils Claude Science for AI-Powered Scientific Research

In Focus

  • Anthropic has been developing Claude Science since October 2025
  • The AI-powered app connects to data sources and systems that scientists regularly use
  • Claude Science is designed to run on macOS and Linux computers

Anthropic has introduced Claude Science, an AI-powered platform that enables scientists to streamline research, manage complex workflows, and analyze data. The platform is part of Anthropic’s life sciences and healthcare initiative. The AI firm has been developing the Claude Science AI platform since October 2025.

What is Claude Science and How Does it Work?

Claude Science is an AI-powered application designed specifically for scientists and researchers. The platform brings coding tools, databases, compute and research workflows to a single workspace.

Claude Science is an app that integrates the tools and packages that researchers most commonly use, produces auditable artifacts, and provides flexible access to computing resources,” Anthropic said in a statement.

On its tutorial page, Anthropic said, Claude Science “connects to the data sources, tools, and systems that teams use daily across R&D, clinical operations, and regulatory affairs, eliminating the need to toggle between platforms and enabling insights that span your entire product lifecycle.

Anthropic, which also launched Claude Sonnet 5, has pre-configured Claude Science with over 60 scientific databases. The tool supports specialized scientific content such as protein structures, genome browser tracks, and chemical structures. Users can interact with the AI-powered app, giving instructions or requesting edits in plain language.

How Do AI Agents in Claude Science Work?

Claude Science uses a primary AI agent to coordinate research tasks. The primary agent assigns work to specialized sub-agents or custom agents created by researchers for specific projects.

Before finalizing the results, a separate reviewer agent checks citations, calculations, and other outputs for potential errors. Anthropic says Claude Science is powered by its existing Claude models, including Opus 4.8, instead of a new or specialized AI model.
When the app generates figures, it includes an underlying code, a description of how it was created, and the full workflow. This enables researchers to review, validate, and update their work with ease. Scientists can use the AI research assistant to:

  • Analyze scientific literature
  • Process complex datasets
  • Create production-ready manuscripts and figures
  • Manage computational workflows efficiently

Which Platforms Support Claude Science?

Claude Science is designed to run on macOS and Linux computers, SSH-supported remote servers, and high-performance computing (HPC) systems. The app operates from the user’s infrastructure, which means sensitive data is retained within their systems instead of being uploaded elsewhere.

For computation-heavy tasks, Claude Science can prepare and submit tasks to Anthropic’s HPC cluster or cloud computing services. This allows researchers to scale workloads from a single GPU to hundreds of processors as needed.

What Does Claude Science Mean for the AI Race?

Anthropic has established its leadership in enterprise AI in recent years. Claude Science extends its technology beyond general-purpose chatbots to specialized scientific research. By combining Claude models with domain-specific tools, AI agents, and high-performance computing capabilities, Anthropic is positioning itself as a leading provider of AI solutions for research-intensive industries such as life sciences and healthcare.
