Amazon Replaces Rufus With Alexa for Shopping AI Agent on eCommerce Website and App

In Focus

  • Alexa for Shopping can respond to custom queries
  • Amazon will retain Rufus’ recommendation features for specific queries
  • The e-commerce firm has integrated Alexa for Shopping into search results

In a move that signals a shift from the Rufus chatbot, Amazon has launched a new agent, Alexa for Shopping. The AI-powered bot can respond to custom queries and complete tasks. Amazon said the shopping agent combines capabilities from the Rufus AI assistant and Alexa+. It utilizes users’ shopping history and any other available data to personalize shopping experiences for users.

How Can Users Access Alexa for Shopping on Amazon?

To access Alexa for Shopping, users can click on a cursive “A” icon on the Amazon website or app. The icon is also available on Echo Show displays. Users don’t need a Prime membership to use Alexa e-commerce assistant. The new tool can:

  • Convert the search bar into a questio-and-answer tool
  • Enable users to conduct a side-by-side product comparison
  • Schedule purchases for users when an item reaches a specific price
  • Inform users whether an item is in stock or what delivery times to expect

Amazon, which recently started rolling out Alexa+ in the U.K, said the new shopping tool is superior to other AI-powered tools in the market because of the valuable data it can access, which includes a vast product catalog and customer reviews.
As I’m using it, I’m just realizing why other AI efforts have struggled with shopping because it’s not just scraping web results and then putting things in a conversation,” Amazon’s top Alexa Executive Daniel Rausch stated as cited by CNBC.

How Long Has Amazon Used Rufus Chatbot?

Amazon introduced Rufus about two years ago as an integral part of its website and app as it sought to ride the generative AI wave. At the time, the e-commerce giant described the chatbot as an “expert shopping assistant”. Since the launch, Amazon has been expanding its capabilities while maintaining the beta version.

The e-commerce giant is now retiring the chatbot. However, the company will retain its recommendation features and shopping history for specific Alexa for Shopping queries. As part of replacing Rufus, Amazon is integrating Alexa into search results on stores. This means when users search for products, a chat window appears showing information and recommended items.

Amazon is bringing Alexa to retail at a time when the e-commerce industry is experiencing an influx of AI-powered shopping bots. Last year, OpenAI added a shopping assistant that curates product options to ChatGPT.

This year, social media giant Meta announced plans to introduce AI-driven shopping features across Instagram and Facebook. The move is aimed at simplifying product discovery and enabling purchases for users without leaving the platforms.

What Does the Alexa Shopping Tool Mean for Amazon Sellers?

By integrating Alexa for Shopping into search results, Amazon is levaging valuable data in product promotion. The action could be disruptive to millions of third-party sellers who pay to promote their items and rank higher in conventional search results. Amazon generates most of its ad revenue from sponsored product listings. The new tool will show ads where relevant and when such additions improve shopping experiences.
