Google is updating its Subscription Management API. The update allows Android developers to ask users to downgrade their plans when they try to cancel subscriptions on Google Play Store. The company revealed plans to update the API earlier this week at the annual I/O 2026 event.
“Coming soon, our in-app Subscription Management API will let users easily change plans directly within your apps. But more importantly, we’re bringing this functionality into the cancellation flow itself. If a user hits cancel, you can offer them a downgrade instead,” Google Representative, Diego Dayan said during the event.
How the Subscription Downgrade Option on Play Store Works
Developers on the Android platform use the Subscription Management API to give their users discounts or cheaper plans within the Google Play Store’s cancellation flow. Google Play Store offers developers a dedicated subscription page to enable them to cancel user plans with ease.
The main goal of Google’s app subscription downgrade feature is to keep developers from losing subscribers. The feature works by prompting users who choose to cancel app subscriptions the option to downgrade their plans.
As part of implementing the Google Play subscription settings, the company has changed the user interface. Instead of displaying the standard “keep” or “terminate” plan options, developers can offer users lower-tier or cheaper alternatives within the same interface. Images shared by Google show a menu similar to the current one, but with the options “Keep subscription” and “Cancel subscription.”
According to the tech giant, the update does not alter the main cancellation process flow in any way. The company is maintaining the final unsubscribe button and making it visible to users who still choose to cancel their subscriptions.
A Strategy for Boosting User Retention
Google’s latest subscription downgrade feature could come in handy for Android developers who struggle to retain users. Where premium tiers are too costly, the new system will offer users affordable options.
Early reviews of the system show that Google is also allowing developers to offer promotional rates or discounts to users. This move offers them a chance to retain users by giving not more reasons to not cancel their subscriptions.
While Google says its cancellation flow remains unchanged, its latest update could raise concerns in the tech industry about the ease of cancelling a service. Users can view the different confirmation options. However, they’ll have to scroll further down their screens to cancel subscription plans.
Besides the subscription downgrade option on Play Store, Google has unveiled a host of other product updates this week. These include an Intelligent Search Box and agentic capabilities in AI Mode, which are set to change Google Search as we know it.
What Does the Play Store Upgrade Mean for Android Users?
As developers utilize the subscription downgrade features to maintain their customer base, Android users will benefit in the process. The feature offers app users a chance to access the apps they want without having to pay a hefty monthly price.
