Apple Allows Monthly Payments for Annual App Store Subscription Fees
In Focus
- New payment option offers users more flexibility
- The payment option comes with a 12-month lock-in period
- Users lose access to their subscription if they fail to pay monthly installments
Apple has introduced a monthly installment option to the App Store annual subscription. The tech giant is positioning the monthly subscription for the App Store as a new way for users to pay for auto-renewable apps. The company said users can cancel subscriptions at any time to avoid auto-renewals.
Why is Apple Updating its Payment Options?
Apple’s App Store payment update offers users a more flexible way to pay for apps and premium services. Previously, the company required users to pay subscription fees for a whole year upfront. This option strained many users. The new payment option allows users to pay for subscriptions in monthly installments.
However, the option comes with a 12-month lock-in period, which means users will still have to pay for a full year’s subscription. The annual subscription fee will be divided into 12 monthly installments. The company will inform users about their completed and pending payments via email and in their Apple accounts.
“To provide transparency, people can easily view the number of completed and remaining payments for the subscription in their Apple Account. Apple will also send email and, if opted in, push notifications ahead of their renewal date to remind them of their upcoming purchase,” Apple stated in a statement.
Apple has faced scrutiny over App Store practices in the U.S. and the EU. Last year, EU developers demanded regulatory action against the company, claiming that its App Store fees disadvantaged them. In the U.K., regulators are pushing Apple to make changes on the App Store to facilitate transparency for developers and address dominance in the mobile market.
Users Must Pay Installments to Access Subscription
While Apple will allow users to cancel their subscriptions anytime, doing so will not free them of their annual commitment. Rather, their subscriptions will remain active until the year-long commitment period lapses. During this period, users will continue making Apple’s monthly subscription payments.
According to the company, users who fail to make a payment will lose access to their subscription. It’s not clear whether this requirement overrides the developer agreement update that Apple introduced last year. The update allowed Apple to recover unpaid fees directly from app revenues.
Monthly subscriptions tend to be easy for most people because of the flexibility they offer. Apple’s 12-month App Store subscription option appears to fall between a monthly and yearly plan, as it trades flexibility for a lesser monthly cost.
Apple has already activated the new payment option for App developers. They can set subscription options on App Store Connect and test them in Xcode. Developers have the option of rolling out the feature to their users starting next month along with the iOS 26.5 update.
What Monthly Payments Mean for Users
The monthly subscription could make Apple’s premium services and services feel more affordable and accessible to people who use them regularly. Apple said the new option has started rolling out to App Store users in all countries with the exception of Singapore and the U.S. However, for Apple device users, the subscription feature will roll out in May 2026 alongside iOS 26.5, iPadOS 26.5, tvOS 26.5, macOS Tahoe 26.5, and visionOS 26.5.
