- iPhone Air is among the thinnest smartphones in the market
- Apple will retain current iPhone Air design in the Air 2
- iPhone Air 2 will be powered by A20 Pro processor
Apple is planning to launch iPhone Air 2 in mid 2027. Sources familiar with the matter said the second-generation smartphone is aimed at making the slim device more appealing to customers. Apple, which dominated the global smartphone market last year, released iPhone Air in September 2025. The smartphone was part of a broader strategy to expand Apple’s $210 billion smartphone unit with new designs.
What Upgrades are Coming to iPhone Air 2?
While the second-generation iPhone Air is expected to retain its current look and feature longer battery life. It’s not clear whether Apple’s iPhone Air upgrade includes a larger battery. However, this might be a challenge due to the iPhone Air’s compact chassis.
Prototypes of the new model, which is code-named V62, show the gadget will feature a second rear camera to support ultrawide-angle photography. Apple considers the battery life and the camera system as the key opportunities for improving iPhone Air. The single-lens camera in the first-generation Air has attracted complaints from most users and reviewers.
The current iPhone Air model is among the thinnest designs available in the market. But this comes with several trade-offs, which makes it challenging to accommodate some features that are available in Pro models. iPhone Air 2 will be powered by A20 Pro processor.
What Product Release Changes has Apple Made?
Apple has made significant changes to its product release schedule this year. Ordinarily, the tech company releases its main iPhones in the month of September. This year, the company plans to unveil higher-end iPhone models, including iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone Ultra in the fall lineup.
Apple will then introduce new standard iPhones, including iPhone 18 and the upgraded Air 2 six months later. iPhone Air 2’s spring release means the second generation device will be launching about a year and a half after the first version. Even so, iPhone Air’s specifications and release timelines could still change.
Apple also plans to unveil its first foldable smartphone before year end. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the tech giant is reportedly building another iPhone featuring a curved screen that wraps around the edges.
What Does the Staggered Release Mean for Apple?
Previously, Apple’s attempts to diversify its iPhone lineup with Mini and Plus models have failed to resonate with consumers. While the iPhone Air has attracted stronger demand, it has not featured among the company’s best-selling devices.
This gives Apple more flexibility in timing the launch of its successor. The company’s staggered release strategy will also help to spread revenue across the year, enabling Apple to better compete with rivals that unveil major smartphones several times a year.
