Stanford Graduates Walk Out on Sundar Pichai at 2026 Commencement Over Google’s Project Nimbus

In Focus

  • Around 200 students walked out as Pichai began his address on June 14
  • Protest was led by Stanford SJP and No Tech for Apartheid over Project Nimbus
  • Google fired 28 employees in 2024 for protesting the same contract internally

Around 200 students staged a walkout during Stanford University’s 2026 commencement ceremony as Google CEO Sundar Pichai took the stage. What was meant to be a milestone celebration turned into a public protest over the company’s business ties with the Israeli government. As Pichai, a Stanford alumnus, was introduced, students rose from their seats, waved Palestinian flags, blew whistles, and chanted slogans.

Despite the disruption, Pichai continued with his address. He opened by saying: “I must warn you all, this is only the second commencement speech that I have ever given. The first was literally in my backyard.

Why Were Students Protesting Sundar Pichai at Stanford?

The demonstration was organized by Students for Justice in Palestine and No Tech for Apartheid, both of which have been campaigning against Google’s contracts with the Israeli government, the Department of Homeland Security, and ICE.

At the center of the controversy is Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion cloud-computing agreement involving Google and the Israeli government. The deal was announced by Israel’s Finance Ministry in April 2021, runs for an initial seven years, and covers government, defense, and security users.

Stanford SJP said: “We don’t need another tech billionaire to tell us how to get rich off of the killing and surveillance of Palestinians. Tell the Google CEO that he is not welcome.

What Happened at the Stanford Graduation Protest?

Videos showed dozens of students walking out of the commencement ceremony, holding Palestinian flags and chanting “Free Palestine.” Several protesters wore keffiyehs as a symbol of solidarity with Palestinians, while some attendees booed during the disruption.

Organizers from Stanford Students for Justice in Palestine had pledged the walkout weeks earlier, directing it at Pichai’s company rather than at fears about automation and jobs.

Why Did Pichai Skip AI in His Commencement Speech?

Pichai sidestepped artificial intelligence entirely during his address. Several tech leaders have faced criticism at commencement ceremonies this year after discussing AI and its potential impact on employment.

The restraint breaks from his usual focus. Pichai has spent the past year promoting his personalized AI agents vision and Gemini-powered Mariner agent. The company has also been pushing Gemini’s video generation as part of its broader AI expansion.

Google Has Faced the Project Nimbus Fight Before

The Stanford walkout is not the first time Project Nimbus has created turbulence for Google. In 2024, the company fired more than two dozen workers who had protested the contract internally, fueling the No Tech for Apartheid campaign. Following those firings, Pichai warned staff not to use the company “as a personal platform, or to fight over disruptive issues or debate politics.

The scrutiny now extends beyond the campus. According to Yahoo News, pressure on the contract has spread to Google’s wider government AI contracts and the heavy AI spending push straining Alphabet’s stock. Whether Google responds to the renewed pressure or waits it out remains to be seen.
